The Brett Kavanaugh sexual assault scandal has struck too close to home for many in the Republican Party,
prompting prominent right-wing figures to shed the veneer of respectability and their obviously insincere concern for the victims of sexual assault.
The right-wing media machine has kicked into full gear with their efforts to discredit Professor Christine
Blasey Ford and to excuse Kavanaugh’s behavior if the accusations are true while the political establishment circles the wagons around him.
Nowhere is the Republican attitude towards the issue more blatant than in Rep.
Ralph Norman (RSC) who thought it would be hilarious and appropriate to tell a joke about a female Supreme Court Justice being sexually assaulted at a political debate.
“Did y’all hear the latest, late-breaking news from the Kavanaugh hearings?” asked Norman. “Ruth Bader Ginsburg came out that she was groped by Abraham Lincoln.”
The stunning disrespect and the dismissal of sexual assault allegations as nothing but a throwaway joke to cover up his tardiness tells you all you need to know about the Republican Party’s so-called “family values.”
Sexual violence is an issue of epidemic proportions in this country that afflicts one in three women,
and it will continue to be a serious problem until our elected officials treat it as such
and until not only those responsible for the attacks but also those who enable or excuse them are forced to face real consequences for it.
