(30 Apr 2018) FELICITY JONES ON PORTRAYING SUPREME COURT JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG: ‘SHE CHANGED AMERICA. SHE IS A TRUE SUPERHERO’
Felicity Jones hopes her portrayal of Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg “does justice to The Justice.”
The British actress stars as Bader Ginsburg in upcoming biopic “On The Basis of Sex,” which dramatizes her early legal career and her efforts to enshrine equal rights in law.
Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas recently, Jones admitted that “to play someone that you deeply respect is a little overwhelming at times.”
“I kept calling her ‘Ruth’ by mistake when officially you call her ‘The Justice,'” says Jones, who also calls Bader Ginsburg a “true superhero.”
President Bill Clinton nominated Bader Ginsburg as an Associated Justice of the Supreme Court in June 1993.
Over the course of her career, she’s worked on numerous high-profile cases, including The United States v. Virginia – a landmark case in which the Supreme Court struck down the Virginia Military Institute’s male-only admission policy.
“She changed America,” said Jones. “And also she did it starting off with pretty much nothing. She grew up in Brooklyn, she fought her entire life, she had so many setbacks, so many knock backs, and she just carried on. She’s an absolute fighter.”
The actress also said Bader Ginsburg has “been absolutely involved in the (movie) from the very beginning.”
“(She’s) seen all the script revisions, she’s been through everything and we just hung out,” she smiled. “We went and all got dinner together in Washington D.C. and got to know her on a personal level as well as a professional level.”
Directed by Mimi Leder, “On the Basis of Sex” also stars Armie Hammer and Justin Theroux. Release dates have not yet been confirmed.
