RUTH BADER GINSBURG: I can’t imagine what the country would be with Donald Trump as our president. He is a faker… He says whatever comes into his head at the moment. How has he gotten away with not turning over his tax returns?
Pundits have seen Justice Ginsburg’s comments as highly unusual and biased for a Supreme Court Justice.
JOHN HEILEMANN: It was really unusual for Ginsburg to do what she did and I think probably inappropriate. I don’t think it was a good idea.
MARK HALPERIN: No, definitely inappropriate, definitely inappropriate, repudiated by some Democrats in this partisan period – that’s extraordinary. If a Republican, if a Republican justice did that to a Democratic candidate, I think the world would explode.
GRETA VAN SUSTEREN: Now we all know she hates Trump, hates him big time, even threatening to move to New Zealand if he’s elected. And of course she has a First Amendment right to sling insults, just like Trump does. And again, she might want to check in the mirror on that one but if Trump does become president, she better recuse herself on all cases involving the White House because no one – not even the New York Times editorial page – could ever think she could be fair. And now I wonder, what other biases are consuming her?
Donald Trump responded to Justice Ginsburg by questioning her mental capacity.
TRUMP: Well, she’s a disgrace to the Supreme Court. For her to politicize the Supreme Court – and this is all the more reason why I hope I win. For her to come out and say the kind of things – there is almost something wrong with her. I don’t think anyone has ever seen that before.
BRET BAIER: So are you questioning her mental capacity?
TRUMP: Yeah, I think I am. I think I’m questioning perhaps her mental capacity. Honesty, for her to have done that was was an absolute disgrace to the Supreme Court and she owes the country, our country an apology and she owes the Supreme Court of the United States an apology. It was disgusting.
While Ginsburg has since admitted her comments were wrong, the White House spokesman joked about her rhetoric.
JOSH EARNEST: Well Josh, she didn’t earn the nickname The Notorious RBG for nothing.
